Overview

Zain Satardien’s practice.

Zain Satardien is the founder of Satardien & Company. Over nearly two decades, his practice has developed at the point where tax, international trade, corporate structure, investment regulation and disputes meet.

That combination reflects the nature of the mandates Zain handles. His role is to identify those connections early and develop a legal approach that works across the mandate as a whole.

Zain advises multinational and regional groups, investors, family enterprises and family offices, sovereign institutions and government entities. His work is centred principally on the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with experience across the wider GCC and other international markets.

Zain is regularly instructed on international trade, international tax, the establishment and restructuring of businesses and investment platforms; transactions and supply chains; international expansion and market entry; private wealth and succession structures; and significant tax, customs, regulatory and commercial disputes.

Where a mandate requires advice from several jurisdictions or disciplines, Zain leads the legal analysis and overall strategy while working with appropriate local counsel and specialist advisers to give the client one coherent position upon which it can act.

Before founding Satardien & Company, Zain was a Partner and Head of Tax and International Trade at a regional firm, where he established and led the firm’s integrated tax and international trade practice. During his tenure, the practice was recognised by ITR World Tax across five Tier 1 categories. The work undertaken during that period also led to Zain being recognised as Highly Regarded in the 2026 edition of ITR World Tax, shortlisted for the 2026 ITR Middle East Tax Practice Leader of the Year award and awarded IFLR Tax Disputes Firm of the Year.

Earlier in his career, Zain was a senior member of Ernst & Young’s EMEIA Global Trade practice in Dubai. Before moving to the UAE, he served in senior legal positions within South African government authorities responsible for taxation, customs and international trade. That experience gave him an understanding not only of how businesses approach legal risk, but also of how tax and trade authorities investigate, interpret and enforce the law.

Zain is ranked Band 2 for UAE Tax in the Chambers Global Guide 2026. Chambers has described him as possessing “a unique blend of expertise and experience that is rare to come across in the market”, while market commentary identifies UAE and Saudi Arabian tax as particular areas of strength. He was also a recommended lawyer by Spear’s 500.

He is the author of Global Trade Law in the Middle East: Essential Principles for the Gulf States, published by LexisNexis Middle East. The book provides practitioner-focused guidance on the international trade, investment, and customs framework applicable across the GCC. His work has also appeared in publications and guides issued by Chambers and Partners, Bloomberg, Thomson Reuters Practical Law, the International Bar Association, Kluwer Law International, LexisNexis Middle East, the World Bank Group and BRICS+.
